Schnitzer Steel Sustainability Report

Schnitzer Steel has published their Sustainability Report for 2014. Read the report at http://www.schnitzersteel.com/sustainability_report.aspx

While the report highlights efforts by the company world wide to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and emphasizes the value of recycling metal as an important factor in sustainability, it does not include any particular details about the facility on the Willamette River.

The work Schnitzer Steel does is valuable in ensuring that metals are removed from the waste stream and recycled for reuse, but the process is inherently dirty, which is why work is on-going to also reduce any negative impacts to the Willamette River.

Schnitzer Steel began a major investment in capturing and cleaning storm water after receiving a notice of intent to sue from the Northwest Environmental Defense Center, see http://www.oregonlive.com/environment/index.ssf/2008/12/schnitzer_steel_...
