In response to a Notice of Intent to Sue detailing violations of the Clean Water Act from the Northwest Environmental Defense Center (NEDC) Schnitzer Steel has agreed to spend $1.6 million on upgrading the storm water runoff system at their N. Burgard Rd. facility.
The Notice details multiple violations including excessive levels of iron, lead, arsenic, cadmium, copper, zinc and manganese, as well as failure by Schnitzer Steel to implement best management practices (BMPs), to conduct necessary sampling, and to take corrective actions when samples show violations.
In addition to the Notice, the NEDC posted a video of discharge at the Schnitzer Steel facility.
